The Power Within Is Infinite with Cleveland McGhie

image0.jpeg

The power within us is too often undervalued and overlooked. If we don’t value ourselves for the unique individual we are, how can we value each other for the unique individual they are?

Cleveland McGhie is an Aboriginal man raised in Dharawal community, with bloodline connections to the Wiradjuri community of Condobolin (NSW) and the Ngunnawal / Ngambri people of the ACT regions. Playing semi professional Rugby League with the Canberra Raiders, Newcastle Knights and more recently in the Canterbury Bulldogs NSWCup squad before COVID, had a major impact on Cleveland’s life and leadership journey.

Join me as Cleveland shares how Rugby League gave him the greatest of all time (GOAT) coach, where he learnt that it’s not about what he achieves, that he’s the captain or best player in the team, but rather the one who inspires others by supporting them to get the awards and titles.

Like many Aboriginal leaders, Cleveland feels the responsibility, strength and resilience of his ancestors, to ensure meaningful and long-lasting impact in our communities and society. His motivation is driven by his passion to inspire people to look beyond their current situation, to be bigger than the limitations set by society and to better themselves through education.

Cleveland believes and advocates that having infinite power starts with valuing ourselves, our strengths, weaknesses, values, beliefs, bias, privilege; and when we value and appreciate who we are, what comes naturally is an appreciation and compassion for valuing others, as the unique individual they are.

Handling Difficult Conversations with Kammeron Cran, Founder of The Team Space

Kammeron 2.jpg

Difficult conversations are a normal part of life.

In the workplace, a difficult conversation is one in which you have to manage emotions and information in a sensitive way, to deal with topics you don’t want to talk about, situations where you’re not sure what to say, conflicting opinions, circumstances where the outcome is uncertain and discussions which make you feel uncomfortable.

Many people avoid difficult conversations in the workplace because it makes them feel uncomfortable. Even experienced managers can find these conversations daunting, despite being an important part of their role, with excuses to avoid them, “I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings”, or “Now is not the time”...

Join me as I talk candidly with Kammeron Cran, Founder of The Team Space, about the impact difficult conversations can have on our wellbeing and her CARE-OF approach to turning difficult concessions into an opportunity to create connection, trust and mutual respect.

Kammeron is an organisational and team coach specialising in humanistic leadership. She is passionate about helping leaders create the space for some much-needed connection, compassion and courage within teams and organisations.

With over 25 years experience in the media industry, Kammeron has a wealth of experience as a senior executive.  Having caught the leadership bug early in her career, Kamm (as she prefers to be called)  has completed many leadership programs through the AGSM, Melbourne Business School and News Corp’s Leadership Development Program and other high performance programs.

Once Kammeron's children were in school, she embarked on her Coaching education and practice. In 2018, she was selected for a scholarship to The Marketing Academy Australia - a global leadership scholarship for marketers who want to change the world.

Kammeron is now a certified Executive and Organisational Coach (IECL), Team Coach (IECL) and Resilience Coach (Driven CReC). She is also a non-executive director of the charity Red Nose and a board member of the National Lotteries and Newsagents Association.

Challenging the Status Quo with Dai Le, Councillor & Founder of DAWN Media

hot-seat-dai-le_tablet.jpg

Diversity brings a variety of perspectives and experiences to a team.

While hiring staff from a range of backgrounds is a great place to start, if you’re working to make your culture more inclusive, the first place to look is your leadership team because actions speak louder than words – and employees will always notice who you promote into positions of power.

If you need a ‘business case’ for building a diverse leadership team, the potential performance boost to your business is the best angle, and here’s a few reasons why..

  • Diverse leadership teams have a larger pool of experience and unique points of view to draw from, which can help with finding solutions to problems and generating new ideas.

  • Seeing people ‘like me’ in powerful positions can inspire employees to stay longer and strive for promotions themselves (i.e. increasing staff retention and motivation).

  • By having a leadership team that reflects a commitment to diversity, you’ll find it easier to attract great talent because high-performing people will be more eager to work with you.

  • People from different groups and backgrounds often bring unique connections with them, which can lead to more networking opportunities for your company.

Join me on today’s episode of The Uncharted Leader as I speak with Dai Le, an Advisory Board Member to Multicultural NSW, a councillor on Fairfield City Council, one of the most the Founder of DAWN Media, about her mission to build an inclusive society where the leadership of mainstream institutions and organizations genuinely reflect the diverse community we live in.

Born in Saigon, Vietnam, Dai spent many years in refugee camps in South East Asia before being accepted for resettlement in Australia. Her childhood experiences and growing up with a dual identity – being a Vietnamese in an Australian and western cultural surroundings, helped to shape her perception of life. It has also made her a passionate advocate for refugees and migrant communities.

A former award-winning journalist, film-maker and broadcaster with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Dai was named one of AFR-Westpac's Top 100 Influential Women in Australia in 2014. With over 20 years of change making experience, Dai is a strong believer in the use of storytelling to inspire, educate and inform.

Connect with Dai on Linked In and be sure to visit DAWN Media to listen to some of the untold stories of unsung heroes.

The Leader As A Coach with Jim Grant, Leadership Development Consultant

Filming.jpg

When was the last time you spoke with your boss about your development as a leader? Are you making the difference you want to make? Are you taking action in direct accordance with your vision, values, mission and goals?

To be successful in the traditional hierarchical model meant developing yourself in a profession (eg law, accounting), as a technician (eg electrician, hairdresser), or a functional expert (eg engineering, marketing) and once you proved yourself, although it was never a guarantee, you’d rise up the ladder to be a leader.

As a leader, your job was to direct employees who understand how the business works and develop them in the skills needed to succeed in their area of expertise.

In the game of diversity and inclusion, this model of leadership, based on power, privilege and control, is null and void.  Let’s talk about one of the new and emerging principles of the leader of the 21st century, the role of the leader as a coach.

When we talk about coaching, we mean something more than building someone’s personal or professional skills. While that’s important and vital, it’s temporary.

When we talk about the real benefits of coaching —the kind that creates a true learning organization, we’re talking about a process that is ongoing, one that can be executed by those inside the organization, within teams and across function.

Join me for a chat with Jim Grant, a 22 year veteran in leadership development and author of The Leader as a Coach, about what I believe to be a direct access into a new model of leadership -  a model that gives support, guidance and mentoring; a model that helps employees leverage their strengths and adapt to constantly changing environments in ways that unlocks their high-performance capabilities.

Jim has been working with senior leaders in many of Australia’s and overseas top organisations for 30 years. Prior to co-founding his first consultancy business, he worked at the Executive table of several Global Companies in People & Culture as well as leading projects in Operations, Health & Safety, Business & Strategy and Mergers and Acquisitions, at times responsible for over 6,000 heads in businesses worth over AUD$6B.

Find Your Dream Life and Fly with Steve Hui, Founder of iFLYflat

IMG_2903.JPG

Are you taking the actions you know to take when it comes to achieving your goals? Are you really doing everything it takes, to get the results you want? What if there was something miraculous waiting for you on the other side of taking action that you could not even imagine right now?

In 2020 Steve Hui was listed as one of Linkedin In’s Top 20 Voices. He’s a well-known identity across the media and the industry, regularly seen on Australian TV, newspapers, magazines and interviews, sharing his 10 year of experience understanding what points members really want from their programs.

Steve is the Founder and CEO of iFLYflat, an Australian reward points travel company that helps select small business clients with strategies to fly Business class on points and transform their travel lifestyle.

Join me as I talk with Steve about his experience in existing a corporate role with Macquarie Bank in the middle of the GFC without any idea of what he was going to do next, how his first-ever experience of business travel set him on a direction he never expected, how he and his team have successfully navigated the massive disruption in the travel industry by focusing on the obvious opportunities and his tips for how to get the experience of travel when you can’t physically get where you’d rather be.

With a background in Finance, it’s no surprise Steve says the secret to success lies in the detail and, in the case of rewards points, understanding the maths behind the points helps you to realise just what you're missing out on and when that happens you’d clearly kick yourself for not having taken action sooner - and rewards points is not the only area where that applies!

Connect with Steve on LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or for more information about iFlyFlat visit their website. Download and listen to the interview on Apple iTunes, Spotify or Stitcher.
