The Social Rebellion with Maz Compton

Maz-Compton-e1466634986803.jpg

Do you drink (alcohol) a bit too much a bit too often? Is your schedule ruled by 'catching up for drinks' and do you secretly find it hard to say "no, thanks" when it comes to the booze?

Society has a dangerous currency: Alcohol - we drink at any occasion, for any reason - be it sad, bad or brilliant - and we fail to understand exactly why we are addicted to it despite the intoxication, hangover and ill-feelings of regret or shame.

Maz Compton has been a fixture in Australia media for over a decade, from the early days of hosting MTV, to the heights of hosting a National Breakfast Show. She got her break on MTV as a VJ (video jockey), spent a few years on red carpets, attending music festivals and interviewed pretty much every celebrity you can think of including her girl crush Sandra Bullock, hip hop star Kanye West, from Coldplay, Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers to pop icons Lady Gaga and Katy Perry and Aussie stars Wolfmother, Guy Sebastian and Margot Robbie.

Maz found herself on a late night radio show in 2010, in 2014 she was crowned Cosmopolitan's Women of the Year in Radio, then in 2015, she launched her own digital interview series as the entertainment specialist with rebranded digital platform Yahoo 7 Be. On January 1, 2015 Maz decided to experiment with living alcohol-free for 31 days and (six years later) has not had a single drink. During this time she experienced an ‘Aha moment’ that ignited a passion to create a platform that helps people redefine their relationships with alcohol and discover true freedom.

After over a decade of fun making headlines and memories in media, Maz redirected her attention to health and wellness. She is now a qualified Wellness Coach, owns a fitness studio and is currently studying a degree in psychology.

Join me on today’s episode as Maz Compton shares her story on manifesting her dream job and The Social Rebellion - a movement helping people redefine their relationship with alcohol, equipping them with better coping strategies, rewriting social norms and addressing the unspoken shame of drinking to cope with life.

“Life is the sum total of all your choices, so make good ones” - Maz

The Power of Play with Jeff Harry

Jeff Harry Photo #16.jpg

Let's be honest, as adults, we spend a lot of our time pretending to be important. While there’s a time and a place for being serious, there is a paradox -  when we let go of the facade that we have “it” (life) handled and we create from a place of play, real magic happens.

Jeff Harry is an expert in working with individuals and organisations like Google, Microsoft, Southwest Airlines, Adobe, the NFL, Amazon and Facebook to infuse more play into your day to tap into your true self, feel your happiest and most fulfilled.

Jeff was selected by BambooHR as one of the Top HR Influencers of 2020 to watch. His work has been featured on AJ+, SoulPancake, SF Chronicle and CNN, and he’s presented at conferences all over the world including Australia’s very own Pausefest.

Join me on today’s episode as we have some fun talking about embracing our own nerdy genius — whatever that is — and, my favourite, how to deal with A-holes and address our own inner a-hole.

A few of the many valuable lessons from today’s conversation…

  • Letting go of the need for certainty and challenging our own BS

  • There is no universal methodology for success

  • How we do have more joy and love in our lives

  • Using play for difficult conversations and identifying your own unconscious bias

  • Rarely does anyone get through personal transformation without confronting their own BS

  • Don’t ask what the world needs, do more of what makes you come alive

A leader is someone who builds leaders, is transparent, vulnerable and puts others ahead of their own popularity - Jeff

Connect Jeff on Linked In and rediscover the power of play, follow him on Instagram and Twitter and start creating a playful mindset with Jeff on YouTube.

She's The Boss with Jules Brooke, Founder & Head Honcho of Handle Your Own PR

IMG_2266.jpg

Jules Brooke, Founder & Head Honcho of Handle Your Own PR started hosting a show about female founders called She’s The Boss back in late 2019 after answering a LinkedIn post by the founder of TickerTV Ahron Young.

At the start of isolation, the channel had 300,000 views every month and was growing fast. She’s The Boss was just one of those shows. Fast forward to June 2020 and Ticker TV is receiving over 4.3 million views a month and She’s The Boss has become a popular show for women running their own businesses.

On the back of its success, Jules has started a Facebook Group, free weekly zoom meet-ups and a soon-to-be-released podcast series, She’s The Boss Chats.

The She’s The Boss Community is attracting successful female founders who have established businesses and a measure of influence. The lunches are an opportunity to share successes, problems and connect with like minded women.

A few valuable insights from today’s conversation:

  • Are women doing themselves a disservice by putting their success down to luck?

  • Say “yes” to an opportunity and work it out along the way

  • Be clear about what you want and back yourself

  • When you see an opportunity be willing to take the first step

  • The upside of starting a business as a woman

  • Knowing when to jump in with both feet and take a leap of faith

  • The undeniable asset of learned independence as a child

  • We are a product of our environment, when we know better we do better

“A leader is someone who supports all the people around them, and lifts up the people who are not as strong as you are” - Jules

Communicate Your Story and Flourish with Steve Grace, Founder & CEO of The Nudge Group

Steve-Grace-Mark-Bond-Photography-00005.jpg

Thousands of people have lost their job and thousands more are feeling insecure and misplaced. Have we seen the worst of it? Is there something we can do to better position ourselves as we come out of lockdown?

Join me on today’s episode as Steve Grace, Founder and CEO of The Nudge Group shares his story in reconnecting with his passion and the simple practice of clarifying your story to help you prepare for not only finding a job, but finding the right job.

I became desperately unhappy at work. It took 2 years before I finally decided to take time off. Surprisingly, it wasn’t until I stopped that I realised how unhappy I was.  After 8 months of spending more time with the kids, learning how to meditate and assess whether it was my job or the industry, I reconnected with my passion for helping founders (like myself) succeed.

With 26 years in recruitment and having successfully built and sold two profitable businesses Steve knows a thing or two about what makes the journey of employment from searching to thriving a success. His latest venture The Nudge Group was born out of a genuine desire to help businesses grow and enhance the employee experience.

Steve and his team partner with Founders, Investors, Venture Capital and Private Equity firms to help grow their employer brand and tell their story to attract top talent globally. From hiring top tier talent to successfully on-boarding and helping you create a thriving organisational culture, they can help you better navigate the start-up and scale-up transformation.

A few valuable insights from today’s conversation:

  • Your story matters

  • Identify your unique selling point

  • Be strategic in the search

  • Ask teammates for insights on your strengths

  • Get curious and learn something new

  • Focus on deepening your expertise

  • You do have control of your destiny

  • Get comfortable with uncertainty

“A leader is someone who does what others are either too scared or too uncomfortable to do to ensure the team succeeds” - Steve
